Course Description:
This 16 hour continuing education course equips nurses with knowledge and tools to care for patients affected by tropical illnesses and to provide culturally responsive care in global and multicultural contexts. Participants will explore Dengue Fever, Typhoid Fever, and Cultural Competence, including Implicit Bias, with special focus on Nepalese populations and Hindu religious considerations.
Course at a Glance
Day 1
Cultural Competence (8 hours)
- Culture & communication, implicit bias, Nepalese norms, Hindu practices
Day 2
Dengue Fever (4 hours)
- Prevalence, transmission, global impact, clinical course, treatment, prevention
Typhoid Fever (4 hours)
- Prevalence, transmission, global impact, clinical presentation, treatment, prevention
Days 3 & 4
- Guided sightseeing tour of Bhaktapur, a Mo:Mo (Nepali dumpling) making class, and visits to Swayambhu (Monkey Temple) and Boudhanath Stupa.
Learning Objectives:
Examine how culture and religion influence health beliefs and care practices
Apply culturally competent, bias-aware communication and assessment techniques
Reflect on personal assumptions and their impact on equitable nursing care
Recognize the pathophysiology, symptoms, and nursing interventions for Dengue and Typhoid fever
Identify diagnostic and treatment strategies, especially those used in resource-limited settings

Evaluation & Certificate
Participants will engage in guided discussion after each module and complete a written course evaluation to receive their certificate for 16 contact hours.
