Dashain in Nepal: More Than a Festival
As Dashain approaches in Nepal, you can feel the anticipation building.
Families make plans to gather, markets fill with people shopping for new clothes and gifts, and kitchens become busy preparing special foods. For many, Dashain means family, blessings, tradition, and coming home.
Dashain is one of Nepal's most important Hindu festivals, traditionally associated with the goddess Durga and the triumph of good over evil. For Newar communities in the Kathmandu Valley, including Bhaktapur, the festival is woven into generations of family, religious, and community traditions.
Why It Matters to Nurses
Dashain is a reminder that culture shapes how people experience life, family, and healthcare.
A Nepali patient may be thinking about family members who have traveled home, missing important traditions, or observing religious and dietary practices that are especially meaningful during this time.
We don't need to know every Dashain tradition to provide culturally responsive care.
Sometimes, we simply need to ask:
“Is there anything about this time of year that is important for us to know while we're caring for you?”
That question makes space for the patient to tell us what matters to them.
Wishing everyone celebrating Dashain a meaningful and joyful festival.
